What to do for a bitten tongue?
People often bite their tongues during generalized tonic-clonic convulsions.
The bad news is that it hurts. The good news is that tongues heal very
rapidly. If the tongue is lacerated half-way across it may require stitches,
and for that your local emergency room's plastic surgeon on call can be
helpful. For the 99.9% of lacerations that are less severe than that, a
recommendation is...
-
Brush your teeth three times a day.
-
Peridex 15 milliliters twice daily. Rinse for 30 seconds and spit it out.
Continue for several days or until the laceration is closed.
Tongue lacerations heal very quickly. Even a deep laceration is usually
closed by the next day and pretty well healed in several more days.
